Dr. Mathieu Blondeel

After obtaining his PhD at the GIIS (now GIES), Mathieu joined the WBS in 2020 as postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Strategy and International Business group. He is interested in a variety of topics at the intersection of global climate and energy politics, with a particular focus on the global energy transformation.
Currently, he is working on a project funded by the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), "UK Energy in a Global Context". The theme has two projects: one on The Geopolitical Economy of Energy System Transformation; and a second on Brexit & Beyond: UK Net Zero Energy Policy.
At the GIIS, he studied the normative dynamics of the energy transformation, focusing on topics such as fossil fuel divestment, the phase-out of coal-fired power generation and coal mining, as well as fossil fuel subsidy reform. He is still involved in a research project there on the role of (public) finance in energy transitions and the greening of central banks.
His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals (Global Environmental Politics, Energy Research & Social Science, Climatic Change, Global Transitions, etc.) and edited volumes. He has extensive teaching experience at Master's level on topics including, but not limited to, (the history of) climate governance, energy poverty & development, energy justice, and energy activism.
