Anke Lion acquired a Master degree in Communication Sciences at Ghent University, graduating in Film- and Television Studies with greatest distinction in 2017. Her master thesis, for which she was honored with the Marte Versichelen Award, focused on the stereotypical and heteronormative representation of love and the ideal partner in Flemish dating shows. Afterwards, she worked as an assistant ad interim for Prof. dr. Stijn Joye at Ghent University.

As of October 2018, Anke has started as a PhD Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) at the Department of Communication Studies (Ghent University). Her research project “Just kidding? – A qualitative research into the sociocultural role and meanings of humorous representations of ethnic diversity in Flemish television comedy”, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Frederik Dhaenens and Prof. dr. Daniël Biltereyst, aims to explore sociocultural tensions over humor and identity in a Flemish climate. Currently, she is a member of the Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS), as well as the Centre for the Social Study of Migration and Refugees (CESSMIR).
