Functieomschrijving

The Industrial Systems Engineering (ISyE) research group of Ghent University performs applied research in the analysis, simulation, optimization, and design of industrial systems. Its research focuses on integrated planning problems in manufacturing and logistics, with special attention for dealing with variability and uncertainty.

This Ph.D. research is part of the EU Horizon project e-CODUCT (Fast-response electrically heated catalytic reactor technology for CO2 reduction). e-CODUCT aims to develop an operational pilot set-up for an electrothermal catalytic reactor, powered by renewable energy sources, that produces industrially valuable CO and Sx from CO2 and H2S. One of the challenges for the techno-economic feasibility of this technology is the variability of both the composition of the feedstocks entering the reactor (in terms of purity and concentration) and the availability of renewable energy. To address this issue, a simulation-based industrial planning module will be developed that will ensure the best possible performance under these variable and unpredictable conditions, especially under the variability and intermittent nature of a renewable power supply.

The goal of the Ph.D. is to develop (1) a simulation model for analyzing and evaluating what-if scenarios using discrete-event Monte Carlo simulation, and based on this, (2) an industrial process planning module using stochastic optimization algorithms that trades off the operational costs with the environmental impacts of the process, and that balances the available supply (of materials and energy) with the demand for end products.

We offer the opportunity to carry out this doctoral research with a scholarship in a pleasant working environment (ISyE research group, Ghent University) and as part of the international consortium that runs the EU Horizon project e-CODUCT.

Functieprofiel

We are looking for a highly creative and motivated PhD student with the following qualifications:

  • You have a strong interest in doing scientific research. You are willing to obtain in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques in modeling, optimization, and stochastic processes.
  • You have a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, or an equivalent degree.
  • You have excellent coding skills (Python, R, or other). Experience with algorithmic approaches or programming frameworks are considered a plus.
  • You are motivated to validate and transfer your finding to industrial applications.
  • You have strong communication skills, and your English is fluent, both speaking and writing.
