Job description

A PhD position is available for research on reasoning systems in Industry4.0 that brings together manufacturing knowledge and IoT data for operations decision support. The position is linked to a European project (H2020 MetaFacturing) that focuses on AI processing chains for resilient production processes in circular economy when recycled materials are fed into the process. The vision is to create a widely-applicable Digital Twin based process setup and control framework, fulfilling the requirements of industrial manufacturers (with a specific focus on metal parts) whose central hurdle is the effective use of available part and process data to improve the time-to-market and product quality. The research focuses on explainable AI reasoning frameworks and knowledge representation to describe how faults propagate and in this way support improved quality management in production processes.

Job profile

  • You hold a Master degree of Science in Engineering in the domain of Operations Research, Control Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent;
  • You have an interest in the combination of academic research and industrial cooperation;
  • You can operate both independently and in a multidisciplinary team;
  • You have organisational skills and are highly motivated;
  • You have good writing and presentation skills;
  • You master the English language, written and orally, in an academic context;
  • You have basic knowledge of AI, statistics and/or knowledge engineering;
  • Programming skills (python, Java, SQL) or experience with IoT data processing are a plus.
