Target group

Members of the Ghent University Doctoral Schools & PhD students affiliated with one of the ENLIGHT partner universities.

Abstract

Science communication and research impact are critical components of scientific research, and this course provides PhD candidates with the tools and skills necessary to effectively communicate their research and maximize its impact. Through a combination of lectures, workshops, and real-world examples, PhD candidates will gain a better understanding of how they can communicate their research effectively as well as how they can maximize its impact.

Course contents & objective

In recent years, it has become clear that scientists must not only conduct high-quality research but also be able to effectively communicate their findings to a broad audience. This includes the scientific community, policy makers, the general public, and other stakeholders who may be impacted by their research.

The aim of this course is to provide PhD students with the tools and skills necessary to effectively communicate their research and maximize its impact. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on activities, and real-world examples, students will develop an understanding of the principles of science communication, including how to effectively communicate research results, engage with different audiences, and navigate the media landscape. Additionally, students will learn about the importance of research impact, including how to measure the impact of their work and how to use this information to inform future research.

Additionally, as this course is part of the European University ENLIGHT, networking opportunities are built into the programme, to maximize the interaction between researchers from the different ENLIGHT partners.

14:00 – Introduction to Ghent University's Museum & Botanical Garden (GUM) by Prof. Marjan Doom

14:30 – Guided tour of GUM

16:00 – Free time, with the opportunity to explore GUM's botanical gardens.
